General Duties: The clerk acts as secretary to the governing body, assisting in the formulation of all meeting agendas, recording minutes of the meeting; and certifying resolutions and ordinances. The clerk issues dog and cat licenses, business licenses, retail food licenses, bingo and raffle licenses, marriage licenses, yard and garage sale permits, sewer tap permits, and street opening permits. The clerk is in charge of school, county and municipal elections in the Borough and is also the registrar responsible for recording deaths, births, and marriages. The clerk also conducts municipal assessment searches.
To apply for a marriage license you must schedule an appointment with the Borough Clerk-please call office to schedule at 908-689-3600 x127.
It is also recommended that you apply at least two weeks in advance-as there is a mandatory three (3) day waiting period AFTER application is filed for license to be issued.
Items required at time of appointment for a marriage license:
- A witness
- $28.00 fee (Check Only) made out to: Washington Borough
- Valid Government issued ID
- Proof of residency (Driver’s license) except for, if you are coming from out of state then the venue on where ceremony is to take place MUST be within the Borough
